Today we got to meet Noa Harnik, a software engineer (and her dog Acorn)! We practiced thinking like a software engineer by designing a phone and apps for Acorn, guided by a set of (puppy-centric) requirements.
We worked both individually and in teams to brainstorm and synthesize ideas for our final products, which included everything from augmented reality "doggles" to a roomba phone! We then had a chance to revisit HTML and CSS by editing this codepen example. Today we welcome meteorologists Kristi Steinhilber from Applied Weather Associates, and Amy Mooney from Digital Globe! Not only did we learn about weather systems, storm chasing, and all of the potential jobs out there for a meteorologist - we also had a chance to design and test our own dropsondes in a homemade wind tunnel.
Today we welcome Dr. Shelley Brown from Harmony Veterinary Center! Are you serious about pursuing a veterinary career?
Dr. Brown has kindly offered a job shadowing / volunteering opportunity to anyone with a serious interest. Let Ms. Weller know if this is you! HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are coding languages that have different purposes, but work together to build beautiful websites. HTML - the building blocks (text, images, links, etc.) CSS - the styles (colors, sizes, fonts, etc.) JavaScript - the programming (showing/hiding things, if this then that, etc.) Click here to begin! Today we spoke with Michelle Lim about her experiences as a web developer and what it means to freelance. Then we created our own websites with HTML, CSS and jQuery (a form of JavaScript). Everyone did an amazing job diving head-first into something new, even if it seemed a little daunting at first. Thanks for sticking with it! Unfortunately, not all of the CodePen projects from today auto-saved correctly. Lesson learned: click "Save" often!
Fortunately, these projects survived (click to open): We had a blast making LED ornaments and decorating cookies :) Want to learn more? The Chibitronics LED Circuit Stickers Starter Kit comes with all necessary supplies + an activity book (also available on Amazon) Click here to take the survey Today we welcome from Siemens: Megan Ferguson, an energy engineer and Jennifer Lien, a civil engineer. What problems does an energy engineer try to solve?
How?
We will experiment with wind turbine kits to optimize blade design and produce the most power! Click here to take the survey Today we welcome Melissa Sampson, an aerospace engineer at United Launch Alliance! What problems does an aerospace engineer try to solve?
We will also experiment with prototyping in TinkerCAD. TinkerCAD is a simple, online 3D design and 3d printing tool. You can use it to make toys, prototypes, home decor, Minecraft models, jewelry – the list is truly endless!
